The day January 14, 2021<\/strong>, With 97 votes in favor, 13 abstentions and 1 vote against, the Chamber of Deputies approved the draft agreement approving the Protocol Relating to the Madrid Agreement Concerning the International Registration of Trademarks.<\/p>\n\n

With this initiative, the government seeks to insert Chile in a modern Intellectual Property (IP) ecosystem, which will simplify procedures, reduce costs and formalities derived from the protection of a trademark abroad.<\/p>\n\n

Once the law is passed and enacted, it will allow applications for trademark registrations to be filed in more than 100 countries<\/strong> that are already part of the Madrid Protocol, in an economical and simple way.<\/p>\n\n

It is important to point out that the Madrid Protocol is not a trademark granting system, nor does it replace national registrations, since international applications must comply with the requirements of the Industrial Property Law of each country.<\/p>\n\n

As the bill progresses through the Senate, we will report on its scope, implementation and implications in Chile and abroad.<\/p>\n\n
